What is Nintendo? — A Closer Look at the Video Game Behemoth
Everyone and their grandmother have heard the name Nintendo. However, most people either think of the consoles or Super Mario, but Nintendo is so much more. So in case you’ve been living under a rock, we’ve written this small introduction to get you up to speed.
What Is It?
Nintendo is a multinational video game and consumer electronics corporation, headquartered in Kyoto. Nintendo is one of the most successful video game companies of all time and is the developer behind such timeless classics like Pokemon, Mario, Legend of Zelda, and many, many others.
Few people know how Nintendo actually started. That is, however, a fascinating story. Nintendo was founded in 1889. Yes, you heard us right — 1889, by Fusajiro Yamauchi. It was originally founded as a card company. They had their start by producing handmade hanafuda (a Japanese traditional card type) playing cards.
But that is a story for another day. Today, we will stick to the basics.
What You Need to Know
You most likely enjoyed Nintendo’s products when you were a kid, even if you don’t know it. Maybe you had a console like the NES or SNES, or maybe, like literally everybody and their great-grandmother, you owned a Wii at some point in your life. Perhaps you played one of the numerous incarnations of Mario, or maybe Metroid, or maybe Zelda? Have you heard of Pokemon? Of course you have. Literally everyone has heard of Pokemon. Guess what? You can thank Nintendo for that too.
Nintendo is basically an ever-present entity in today’s pop culture, and it practically shaped an entire generation of younglings that we’ve decided to call Millennials.
Nintendo has, through the years, consistently remained at the top of the gaming industry. Year after year, they have released tremendous games, consoles, and add-ons. They’ve had their share of trouble, like anybody else, but through their incredible efforts, they have managed to stay relevant much longer than any of their competitors and leave their mark on the gaming industry and the world.
